The docks of Briema were humble planks set over heavy pilings. The sailing ships that docked here brought goods from other parts of Elimser, and sometimes brought visitors, too. Today it would be the site of the distinguished visitors from the north seas, who had travelled a long way to attend the coronation of the new dragon queen.

Tallya and Curran rode a carriage to meet them, and as the mayor had said, the streets of Briema needed repair. They were jostled from one side of the carriage to the other, and though they laughed and braced themselves, Tallya knew that it would cause a bad impression to visitors.

“Did you say that we had a sorcerer who could repair streets?” she asked.

“No specifically, but they can move stones with little effort, so I thought they’d be useful for some rebuilding tasks. Oof.” Curran slammed his shoulder into the carriage side as one of the wheels encountered a hole in the street.

“I’d say we need to make that a priority.” Tallya straightened the unornamented golden crown that Queen Elaizid had loaned to her. The true crown of Elimser, given to her by the spirit of the Dragon Queen, was a melted black mess of annealed metal. A new one was being made for her in Aeria, and they promised it would be done by the coronation.

At last, the jostling ride ended as they turned onto the road that led to the harbor. Tallya took a deep breath. “Kindrick said that he’d be meeting us there with a suitably showy number of uniformed guards.”

“I’m certain it will be impressive.” Curran’s lips twitched.

“What is so funny?”

“Only that you said “uniformed” as if they were ever out of uniform, and then I remembered that when dragons change back to human shape, they are naked.”

Tallya shook her head and gave him her best fake sad look. “Ullah once told me that all men, regardless of age, remain about twelve years old in some part of their mind. I’ll have to tell her that I’ve seen proof that she was correct.”

The carriage door opened and Kindrick appeared. “Why are you both smirking?”

“We are not smirking. We are admiring your uniform,” Tallya said, extending a hand so that he could help her out of the carriage.

She didn’t use to need assistance getting in and out of places, but her queenly “uniform” consisted of gowns with so much fabric and delicate touches that she could barely move in some of them. She thought of her wedding gown and shuddered.

The barge had come to rest at the main pier and was being secured by tall figures with long, silky black hair and greenish skin. Sea dragons in their human shape? Or something else? Tallya was fascinated.

A small boat had moored nearby, and a swarm of small brown humanoid creatures poured across the gangplank and headed right toward her. Kindrick started to draw his sword, but she stopped him with a gloved hand to his chest.

Let’s see what this is, Kindrick, she said in Dragonspeak.
